About

Welcome Positive Parents and Caregivers, I am so glad that you are here!

One of my favorite quotes is, "Beneath every behavior their is a need. When we address the need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause of the behavior and not the symptom."

This is such a necessary truth in our world today. Many of the behaviors that you may notice in your child can oftentimes be a direct result of Trauma.

Here are the three different types of trauma:

  • Acute trauma results from a single incident.

  • Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse.

  • Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature.

There are four recognized common trauma responses:

Fight: This can look like physical fights, yelling, physical aggression, throwing things, and property destruction.

Flight: Flight includes running or fleeing the situation.

Freeze: This is when the body remains still, unable to move, numb. Children feel like they are not actually a part of their bodies; similar to a panic attack.

Fawn: This is when a person is constantly seeking favor by servile flattery or exaggerated attention

So here you have it in a nutshell. It's so easy to scream, yell, insult or even harm our children physically, emotionally and socially as we inflict what we perceive as disciplinary consequences to any of the four mentioned behaviors. When we do this without being mindful of possible trauma in a child's life, we are unintentionally causing more harm and additional trauma to our beloved children.
